COURSE DESCRIPTION - A study of major accounting terms, concepts and principles leading to an understanding of the financial statements that are the end product of any accounting system.  Use of accounting information and the financial statements (income statements, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and statement of retained earnings), measuring business income, completing the accounting cycle, accounting for merchandising operations, financial reporting and analysis, internal control, short-term liquid assets, inventories, long-term assets, and liabilities are studied in this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES - Upon completion of this course, the student should:

Be able to read, analyze and understand the various accounting reports characteristic of a business setting.

Have an increased comprehension of the financial aspects of business entities.

COURSE STRUCTURE - This course is designed to meet two sessions a week.  During the first session topics will be introduced and covered at a lower level, then during the second session the topic will be elevated to a higher level.  For example, you may be requested to complete an exercise/question one session and then complete a more complex problem the second session.  At times, problems will be presented to the class by groups of students. The course follows a format, requiring extensive student participation.  Students are expected to have the assigned readings, exercises and problems completed prior to class time.  Since this is a four-credit course, you will probably spend around fifteen hours a week preparing for class sessions.
