Let's continue with the Navigation Tool Bar
The Stop button can be useful if you: click on a link but change your mind. You can click the Stop button and the browser will stop downloading the web page.
If you click on a link and it downloads slow or doesn't download completely, you can click on the Refresh button and the browser will "reload" the web page. This happens sometimes if the web page you clicked on is "busy" or for a variety of other reasons.
Home is just what it says...click it and the browser will take you back to your browser's Home page...whatever that is. You can select your home page...whatever web page that you want to appear in your browser when you open you browser or when you click on the Home button.
Well, you might ask...how do I change my Home (Start) page?) Easy...of course...if you know what buttons to push. In MSIE (above), simply click on View on the Menu Bar and you will see this "drop-down" menu.
Left click on Internet Options at the bottom of the menu.
This is what you will see when you left click Internet Options
(Left click on the General tab if it is not already selected.) Notice on the menu...near the top, it says: "Address" You can simply type in the web page address (if you know it) of your desired "Home" page. Since it's already "blue", you can just type the new address and it will overwrite the existing address. Finally, click the Apply button on the bottom right side of the Internet Options window. (Note...you will not "see" the new Home page on your browser until you left click on the Home button on your Navigation Tool bar.
Hmmm, that's too easy you are thinking...well...it's true...it is easy if you know how to get to this menu...
Another way to change your Home page without typing in the address is to do this: 1. go to your desired Home page on your browser...e.g. http://www.inette.com 2. Click View, Internet Options, General Tab and finally, in the Home page section, left click on the Use Current button. Use current just means use whatever web page that you happen to be on at the time...as your new Home page.
Ok...while we are in Internet Options in the General tab...we should do/point out a few more things that may be useful to you.
Temporary Internet Files - As this section says, "Pages that you view on the internet are stored in a special folder for quick viewing later." This is really a neat function that the browser performs, quietly, in the background, without you even realizing it. So, once you view (download) a web page, the browser stores the web page info/graphics etc for "quick viewing later." On of the uses of this function is to allow you to view pages "offline" (without having a connection to the internet open/active.) The web page(s) will display properly in your browser but any links to pages that you have not previously viewed will not be accessible unless you open your connection to the internet. So what good it is? Well, one example is this. If you want to view web pages on a laptop for example, and later take the laptop to a meeting or presentation of some sort, you can show the web pages on the laptop, without the need to string out a long phone line and without having to worry about whether or not you will be able to connect to the internet at all. Another use is to save you time when you are "on-line" on the internet. Once you visit a web page, the computer "remembers" all of the pieces of the web page and then can call them out of your computer memory instead of re-downloading the entire page...again...from the internet. So, you see, this Temporary Internet Files functions actually speeds up our viewing of web pages.
The opposite side of the coin is the fact that the Temporary Internet Files take up disk space on your hard drive. If you are concerned with storage space on your hard drive, you can Delete the Temporary Internet Files by clicking on the Delete Files key (see picture above) and the computer will simply empty to folder. Neat huh?
Finally, History. As the name and description imply, the browser remembers all of the web pages (URLs of the web pages) that we visit and keeps them in memory. If you have ever been to a really neat web page and forget to bookmark it or put it into favorites and then, a day or two later you really want to go back to that page...well, the History function allows you to access the pages that you have visited...on mine (see picture above) for 20 days! There, that should give you some peace of mind about not losing a web page that you really want to see again.
The flip side of the coin with the History function is that you can set up your browser to store History for anywhere from 1 to 99 days. Or, if you decide to get rid of your...History...for example, you don't want your boss to see what you have been doing at work, on the office computer, (of course...this would NOT apply to any of us or anyone you know), you can simply click the Clear History button (see picture above.) There, that's the scoop on Temporary Internet Files and History. These will be on the final exam, of course!
