Browsers III
Microsoft Internet Explorer
(MSIE)
Note: if you use Netscape, I will
be building IBT Browser Pages for you soon.
Let's continue (again) with the Navigation Tool Bar (the bottom bar below.) Yes...we are temporarily "stuck" on the bottom bar...but not for long!
The next thing we want to discuss is the Address (Text Box.) Notice the white rectangle with my web page address in it? http://www.inette.com
That's my URL (which you have already memorized by now.) Well, if you know the URL or web page address of a web page, you can just type in the URL and click the ENTER key on your keyboard and...like magic, the browser will take you to the desired web page...that is...if you typed in the EXACT address...no typos allowed, no spaces, no missing : or // or www or anything...no margin for error here...it MUST BE EXACT.
So...how do we type in a web page address in the Address text box? And, why is it called a text box anyway? Well...last things first. Windows uses text boxes to allow us to "interact" with..."talk to" the computer. It's a space where we can type in stuff such as URLs. It's standard in all/most Windows applications and has certain operating characteristics that it would be beneficial for you to know/understand.
1. To access the "text box", simply place your mouse pointer in anywhere in the white area of the text box. Notice how your mouse pointer will change to an
(I-bar) when you are pointing in the "Text Box?" Then, just left click the mouse...ONCE! Notice, that when you do this....the text in the "text box" turns blue! Also notice that there is a tiny, vertical, black, blinking bar in the text box...just to the right of the last letter "C" in the URL. It's barely visible but if you look close...it's there. This is referred to as the "insertion point" in text boxes and other applications in Windows.
Hmmm, well, as you may have guessed, this is just one more way of the computer "talking" to us. What the computer is saying is this..."ok computer operator...I'm ready for you to type text now and when you do, I'll just erase what's here and type in whatever you type on the keyboard."
As you already know...the computer is constantly "talking" to us and if we choose to listen, it actually makes sense...well....most of the time.
Ok...I'm ready to type...here' goes...remember...no spaces, no extra : or w or . or whatever....type slowly and carefully until you get the hang of it. Here's what I typed:
Notice a few things about the URL -
1. http (Hyper Text Markup Language) (Do you need to know that? No...but if you want to impress your friends...well...maybe you should remember???)
2. : // (Colon is the shift semi-colon and the slash slash are the forward slashes - top of the slash pointing to the right) (Notice too that the : // and . are all grouped together on the keyboard, just to the right of the L. Convenient huh?)
3. www ( World Wide Web) ...the place on the internet where all of the web pages are houses...in millions and millions of computers around the world...neat huh?
4. . (dot or period)
5. nwtc (Northeast Wisconsin Technical College)
6. . (dot or period)
7. tec (Technical)
8. . (dot or period)
9. wi (Wisconsin)
10. . (dot or period)
11. us (United States)
Note also...the us URL extension at the very end of the URL will sometimes be com (commercial), gov (governments), edu (educational), org (organization), net or others like us and other country extensions. These are all unique URL designations. (Mine is .com)
Finally, now that you have successfully entered the EXACT URL...you can take your finger and hit the Enter key on your keyboard and the browser will take you to...you guessed it...NWTC's web page.
So, now you know that....if you know the exact URL of a web page, you can type it in the "Text Box" and hit the enter key on your keyboard with you finger and the browser will take you to the desired web page.
So, go ahead and try it...if it doesn't work...type in the EXACT URL again and it WILL WORK...eventually!
A few more things that you need to know about typing in URL in the Address "Text Box."
1. Not that I've suggested that you must type http: etc....I'll tell you that on the newer browsers...MSIE 4.0 or higher and Netscape Communicator...you do not need to type that stuff in...the browser "assumes" that you want to go to a http:// web site and therefore it is no longer required that you type it in. So...you can now save a little typing. Try typing www.nwtc.tec.wi.us and see what happens.
Much easier huh?
2. Also, on some of the more popular web pages (no...not inette.com) you can even shorten this up more and only type the actual domain name such as: cnn.com or yahoo.com or whatis.com (without the http:// or the www) Try it...it REALLY WORKS! By the way, these are 3 excellent web sites. I highly recommend whatis.com. It's an excellent site that answers all of our...."what is ...........?" or "what does .......mean?" questions...on all internet/computer terms. Try it...you'll like it....I think!
Well, I guess that we spent enough time on typing known URLs in the Address "Text Box" so it's time to move on to bigger and better things.
By the way. Just how many actual URLs do you have stored in your brain? Just wondering. Most of us have a few...but that's about it. So, if we know the URL, we can type it in and go to the web page.
But, if we DON'T know the URL...hmmm, well...I guess we have a little problem....but nothing that we and our browser can't overcome.
