Ok...let's look at the Outlook Express window. Please observe the three "text" areas on the window. On the left, are my folders...under the heading Local Folders. Some I put there, some were there (inbox, outbox, Sent items, Deleted items, Drafts, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Tasks.) This is a convenient place to store your e-mails...incoming and outgoing...if you choose to save them...at all. It's your choice...there is no law or rule that says that you must save e-mail. I save some and delete some...I won't get into how to add/delete folders in Local Folders...right now...because many of you aren't using MS Outlook Express, and...besides, I want to stay focused on the main things that you need to know about e-mail.
Observe the text area on the right side now...it's where we can see all of our incoming mail. (Notice in the left text box, under Local Folders, I am in the Inbox right now...because I chose to be in it by left clicking it...and note also that the text boxes on the right are displaying whatever is in my inbox...right now.)
Right now, I only have one e-mail in my inbox...the one I sent myself from my Hotmail Account.
Finally, notice the lower right text box...it's the e-mail message itself...displayed for reading. Notice also that it displays who the message was from, to, and the subject of the message, as well as the body of the message itself. Note finally, that my Outlook Express Inbox window is not maximized. You can maximize it if you want but I like to run mine at the size you see below...just a habit I guess...but...it works for me!
Observe now, back up in the top right text box, the icons to the left of the word From. My message doesn't have an icon, but some do.
Here is a list of the icons, and what they mean, according to MS Outlook Express Help. Note, my message to myself does not have any attachments (no paper clip), has not been marked a priority (no red exclamation mark), etc. My message is marked with the white, open, envelope which means that this message has been read. Neat huh? Thought you'd like to know what these mean...and sometimes it's a problem finding stuff like this in the Help menus...please study all of these icons as they will be on the "final" exam! :-)
