Favorites IV
Microsoft Internet Explorer
(MSIE5.0)
Note: if you use Netscape, I will
be building IBT Browser Pages for you soon.
This time we want to click on Favorites (on the menu bar) then Organize Favorites...so go ahead and do that now.
When you click on Organize Favorites...this is what you will see...well...almost. remember, what you are seeing on the right side of the Organize Favorites menu are MY folders...some of them at least...so your screen will not look exactly like mine...ok?
Notice that on the left side of the Organize Favorites window/menu (above)...we can see four buttons: Create Folder, Rename, Move To Folder, and Delete a folder. This is the menu that allows us to "clean" up/organize our Favorites folders.
Now, just take a second or two to ponder what it is that you might want to do in this section of the favorites options.
You might want to create a folder for future use or you may want to create a folder with a new name and then move some of your favorites into the new folder...
Or...you may want to delete a folder that you don't want or don't use anymore.
Or...you may want to move one of your favorites into another folder (with a better name for example...that better describes the favorite)
Or....you may just want to rename an existing folder to better describe the contents of that folder.
Let's try the rename function and see how this works. The first thing that we have to do is tell the computer which folder we want to rename.
We do that by selecting a folder (I'm going to select "a computer learn site" folder) by left clicking on it once. Watch...
Notice how the computer is "talking" to us....giving us information/feedback? When you left clicked on the "a computer learn site" folder...you told the computer to open it...and it did. In return, the computer shows you that it did what you told it to do by actually showing us the folder in the "open" position and also, the computer shows us what's inside of the folder. Neat...huh?
Now that we have a folder selected, we can give the computer another command. This time click on the Rename button and we'll see what the computer does....
Notice that the computer obeyed our rename command and is now giving us some feedback. It's telling us that it's ok to go ahead and type a new folder name in the "text" box or it's ok to go ahead and rename the folder!
The way the computer tells us all of that is this: notice to the right of the folder that we want to rename...there is a black border around the current folder name, plus...the current folder name is highlighted in dark blue. This is just the computer's way of saying to us..."ok...type the new name on your keyboard and I will overwrite what is here right now."
So...go ahead and type a new name for the folder. I'm going to rename mine...hmmm...ok...I'll name it "a computer learning sites". (Note...I sometimes precede my folder names with an "a" so they will be near the top of my huge favorites list....that makes them easier to find and also quicker to get to...when I want to go to one of those sites.)
To finish the process...just left click outside of the text box or click the enter key on the keyboard and the folder now has a new name...because you renamed it! Congrats! Nice work.
Last thing to do is click the Close button...
Naturally, if you want to delete a favorites folder, you can select the folder that you want to delete, by left clicking on it, then click the Delete button and the folder will be deleted. Once again, click the Close button to finish this procedure. Whew...that was a lot of stuff. If you have this mastered...you can do anything!!!
One final thought. Once you have websites saved in your favorites....you can access them several ways.
1. On the menu bar, click Favorites, then you will see YOUR list of folders and/or favorite websites saved...just point to one of the folders and the computer will "show" you the contents of the folder, in a menu to the right...see Dave's Guide and SK Web Construction..."? Ok.
The last thing we have to do to actually go to the favorites page is to point at the site we want...I'll point at Dave's Guide and this is what I see:
Just Left click on "Dave's Guide" and the browser will open that website for you. Simple huh? Once you know how to "talk to the computer!
Guess we'd better take a break before we start our next subject which will be................(I'm thinking about this...but will probably go with the process of downloading some of the FREE stuff available on the internet.)
