Ready for more Search stuff? Or ready to pack it in and forget about the internet? Just hang in there for a bit and maybe you'll start to get more comfortable with all of this seemingly confusing Search stuff...maybe?
So, what other ways can we Search the internet for fun, interesting, useful stuff? Well, there are literally hundreds of Search Engines available to use.
The most popular (I believe) is...Yahoo. One of my favorites is Dogpile. Other favorites of mine include... Google.com, Alta Vista, Infoseek, Hotbot, Ditto.com, and many more.
Anyhow, one of the key things to remember about Search Engines is that they all work a little bit differently from one another. Ok?
Let's try our search for nwtc using my favorite...Dogpile. It's called a Multiple Search Engine because it uses many (multiple) search engines to display its results. Ready...let's try it. Oh, one more thing...where can you find Dogpile? Well, if you are a former student, you know that I have it on my web page at www.inette.com in the frames "hot links" section or in the text "hot links" link.
Also, as you may have guessed by now...many of the popular search engines, if you know their name, have their name in their URL. So, I guess we could assume that Dogpile could be accessed by typing www.dogpile.com in our Address Text Box. Let's try that and then get to the search.
The first thing I'd like to point out to you is the obvious...or maybe not so obvious thing about this web page....there is literally tons of stuff on the page and to the untrained eye, it can be a bit overwhelming. Having said that, I'd like you to focus your eye on the middle section of the Dogpile browser...and nothing else (it's not even necessary to read all of the other stuff...since we are not interested in any of it...at least not right now...
Under the HUGE word Dogpile, is some advertising. Under that is what we are looking for...well...almost. See the blue tab with the word Dogpile on it? Ok, now look down, just below that and you will see the famous Text Box! Success! That is what we are looking for...nothing else...just the spot where we can type in our search word/words. As is every Text Box in a Windows operating system, the first thing that we need to do is point our mouse pointer inside of the Text Box. Next, we need to left click on the mouse to get the insertion point (black, vertical, blinking line). Once we have that (not before or we will inadvertently click on something else...), we can type in our search word(s). I typed in nwtc...as you can see in the screen shot above.
Once you have typed in your search word(s), left click once on the "fetch" button and Dogpile will go to work...searching the internet for nwtc. Let's look at the results of this Dogpile Search. Taking any bets about the results that we might find? Just wondering! Here's what you see after the results are in by Dogpile:
Ok...so where are the results? Hmmm...all of the stuff in the black boxes (tables actually) as well as the Us: Smart Financial Discussion above them are Paid Advertisements. You can look at them and click on them if you want...they are free to look at but...that is not why we are on this page. We are interested in the results of our search for nwtc. Anyhow, if you look around on the screenshot above, and if you look very carefully...on the bottom left you will see a familiar phrase (if you read all of these tutorial pages that is...)...it's Northwest Tissue Center...again...see it?
Notice just above that is "Displaying first 2 documents." Above that is "the query sent was nwtc." And, finally, above that is Search Engine: Looksmart (a search engine) found 2 documents.
Wow, now we are getting somewhere...didn't find what we are looking for...yet, but now we are getting a good ideas as to what we should look for and what we should ignore on a search engine's web page? Aren't we??? :-)
Finally, notice the browser slide bar on the left side of the MSIE Browser...it's fairly small and therefore, we know that there must be lots of result to our search (query) about nwtc. So, the next thing to do is to scroll down the page a bit and see what else Dogpile found for us.
