As you view this page on your browser, note a few things about the mouse pointer...YOUR mouse pointer.
1. If you point anywhere in the white
section of this web page, the pointer will look like this....
Think of this as meaning that there
is "nothing" that the computer sees that it can do anything with...in other
words, the computer "sees" nothing...
2. If you point in any of the words
(text) on this page, your mouse pointer will change to this...
This
is an "I-Bar". The computer "sees" text and tells you that it is
seeing text. Remember, the computer can't talk (yet) but it is constantly
"communicating" with you by means of "visuals"...so...you may just
want to "listen" to what you computer is "saying" to you.
3. Now, point your mouse pointer at the words The
Mouse on the bottom part of this web page. Notice that your mouse pointer
changes to...
The computer is "communicating" valuable information to you. What
it is saying is..."there is a "link" here to another web page."
If you want to look at another web page, just left click once...on the
"link." Note that this particular mouse pointer
actually...visually...almost tells you what to do....the index finger on the hand should
left click on the mouse...make sense?
4. When you "tell" the computer that you want to see the next web page (by left clicking on the link), the computer will obey your command and will go out onto the internet and download the web page for you. As it is doing this (it takes some time, depending on the "size" of the web page,) the computer will "talk" to you again by showing you this pointer...
The computer is actually
saying..."wait a minute while I download the web page." When the page
"downloads", the pointer will change back to one of 1 - 3 above....ready to
"talk" to you again.
Sometimes, a web page will not "download"
properly...or at all and the
will just spin and spin and spin. That is the computer telling you
that it is trying REALLY HARD to download the web page but it can't...for some reason.
It's really saying..."Wait a minute...I'm really doing my best and will open the web
page just as soon as I can, if I can, when I can...if ever...maybe..."
I guess you could think of these mouse pointers as the computer's "sign" language. Yeah...that's it...sign language.
