So, what did/do you think of the Dogpile Search Engine? It usually works for me. But you have to be patient and read through some of the stuff before you find what you are looking for, if you find it.

Another multiple search engine is All4one.com. This one looks a lot different than Dogpile and displays 4 different search engine results on your screen all at one time in 4 small windows. You can look a the results of 4 different search engines all at the same time.

Some Search Engines are designed for specific tasks such at Ditto.com. If you are looking for pictures on the Internet, Ditto is designed to find them for you and SHOW them to you..in it's search results.

A few more thing about Search Engines.

1. When you are searching for things with 2 or more words, you might want to remember/know that most search engines (not all) search for the individual words and not the "string" of words...as we type them in. For example, suppose we want to search for Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. (4 separate words but to us...one Technical College.) Most search engines will search for the individual words "northeast", "wisconsin", "technical", and "college." Knowing that, you can guess what the results might be on some search engines...right? To overcome this "shortcoming" of search engines, some use what's called Boolean search tools...no more than AND OR NOT etc. E.G. we could change our search to read: northeast and wisconsin and technical and college and the search engines (most of them) will zero in on our "phrase", rather than the individual words.

Let's try this and see if it really works. I'll use Dogpile again, since it's a Multiple Search Engine and will allow us to compare how different search engines "look" at web pages when performing their searches.

Experiment 1: (using Dogpile)

I'll search for northeast wisconsin technical college by typing in those exact words, with a (space) in between each one...like this:

Notice that the search results, using two different methods, with Dogpile as the search engine, our results were identical. So, does that mean that Boolean is "bull?"

Some conclusions?

No...not at all. It just points out that each search engine uses it's own methods of scouring the internet for information. Since we use Dogpile, which is a Multiple Search Engine, and included and excluded "Boolean" words...AND...and since some search engines IGNORE those words, and since some search engines AUTOMATICALLY insert either "AND" or "+"....our experiment failed in one way and was successful in another.

Bottom line, I guess, is this...

1. Searching the Internet is not an exact science

2. Each Search Engine uses different methodology to perform your search

3. Dogpile yields LOTS of results, whether they are what you are looking for or not is a different matter.

4. Searching the Internet may or may not take a little time.

A case in point is Google.com. Google has two buttons you can choose from when performing your search, and kinda sums up the current workings of internet search engines. One button says....wait...let me show you.
