A Pointed Reminder
A personalized gift I received some time back
Had my embroidered first name in bright bric-a-brac
On a pair of work gloves for a handy home owner
Received from a friend and creative donor.
There is just one question that still persists,
For as I was gloving my naked fists,
My hand discovered a startling stinger--
A needle and thread--had stuck to my finger.
What was the aim of this present of love--
A needle umbilically fixed to its glove?
Could the seamstress, surprised in some last minute haste,
Have somehow neglected to sever her baste?
A timely tool for some handy demand?
Or a ready reminder of which mitt fits which hand?
A self-healing glove with own needle and thread?
Or a self-contained sliver remover instead?
If coming right to the point is a writer's device,
Did it need to be stated in style so precise?
Though the personalized pair became threadbare and rotten,
The point of the gift was not soon forgotten."A Pointed Reminder" accepted for publication in "Chasing the Wind", National Library of Poetry 1997 Winner of the "Editor's Choice Award for outstanding Achievement in Poetry presented by the The National Library of Poetry." This book will be published in January.
