Happy Holidays 2000
by Mel Wade
'Twas a month before Christmas
I was stuck in reverse
Not a notion was stirring
Nor even a verse.I put down my pencil
And said what's the use?
How can I be amusing
When the Grinch steals my muse?Last year I had dogged it
And bided my time
While our seven month puppy
Was assigned to the rhyme. Now just a year older
Our "Sunny Delight"
Would rather chase squirrels
Than sit down to write. The times when she's quiet
We never annoy her,
She can choose any couch-
(An equal chair employer.)Whoever's the walker
Puts on frequent miles
And also excels in
Picking up piles. At night when we walk her
The four-wheel drive mutt
Is jerking so hard
She's a pain in the ---- shoulder.Sunny loves people
and grandkids the most
To neighborhood groupies
We often play host. We're seventy now
And not even toothless
With rug rats and dog
We're not totally youth less. For playing with kids
Is not a lost art
Getting up from the floor's
The most difficult part.As a fun destination
As one kid would attest
In comparison to Disney
Grandpa's the best.Grandpa plays tennis
At least four times per week
You might say amounting
To every other creak. So from Bette and Mel
And Sunny Delight
Merry Christmas to all
And to all a good night.
