CLASS Information:
Course Description: This course provides the opportunity for the learner to develop the knowledge skills process and understanding of the use of financial calculators, checkbook records, purchasing, shipping/receiving, accounts receivable, and accounts payable systems, markups, discounts, credit charges, business loans, depreciation methods, inventory methods, breakeven analysis, sales gains/losses, and financial statement analysis.

Course Competencies: You have the opportunity to learn the following skills in this course:
- Solve common financial word problems using the financial calculator.
- Perform checkbook recordkeeping and bank reconciliations.
- Explore accounts receivable systems and the use of mark-ups and mark-downs, as well as payment discounts.
- Explore a purchasing system and the use of trade discounts and shipping terms.
- Solve lump-sum transactions.
- Solve annuity transactions.
- Describe the four common types of inventory systems.
- Describe the four common financial depreciation methods.
- Perform vertical and horizontal financial statement analysis.
- Demonstrate proper use of accounting journals and ledgers.
- Describe various components of financial statements.

Instructor Responsibilities: As your instructor, I commit to communicating openly and frequently with you about this class. I will maintain a professional, safe learning environment adhering to the policies of the college. You can expect a reply to communication, be it via e-mail, through online discussions, voicemail or in person, within 24 - 48 business hours.
Grading Policy: Tests are administered in class, and students must take tests on their respective scheduled testing dates, unless excused. An unexcused missed test not taken on the assigned testing date will receive a zero score. Students are permitted to take one test late, without penalty, however, this test must be completed within one week from the date the test was administered in class, or the test will receive a zero score, with no further retake opportunities. All tests must be completed by the final class period.
Each chapter in the textbook has a corresponding ten-question quiz posted in Blackboard. These quizzes should be completed outside of class time and submitted in class. Quizzes should be completed by the appropriate due dates and will be assessed a one-point deduction per class period late. Quizzes more than two class periods late will not be accepted or graded.
This class incorporates the use of a financial calculator. The NWTC supplemental handbook for this class illustrates the use of a financial calculator and provides many practice opportunities. Financial calculator applications will be covered and tested in logical sequence with the textbook material.
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. While homework will not be collected or graded, it is recommended that all problems be completed for optimal preparation in completing quizzes and tests. Homework will be reviewed in class as learning activities.
